Description An introduction to substantive areas of law which affect the majority of average, low-income citizens. Specific areas which may be explored: social security law, landlord/tenant law, public housing law, criminal injuries compensation, and domestic violence. This unit will also focus on the manner in which problems and disputes in each of the areas are addressed and resolved by legal and government institutions. This unit will be valuable for those students intending to work in community law centres.
Contact time Seminars: 3 hours per week.
Prerequisites L170/LEG170 Legal Process or L100/LEG100 Law, Justice and Social Policy or LEG150 Australian Legal System or permission of the Unit Coordinator and Academic Chair.
Exclusions LLB or Juris Doctor students may not enrol in L223/LEG223 Social and Welfare Law for credit.
Notes Students taking the unit at the advanced level will be required to demonstrate an ability to work on topics that require more independent thinking and advanced research or analytical skills.
