Description This unit considers the nature and causes of variation underlying the monitoring, management and control of technological and other processes, and provides an introduction to relevant statistical methodology and computer software. Topics: descriptive statistics and displays; control charting; process capability; summarisation and comparison of processes, regression methods and time-series; seasonality and periodicity; sampling plans; applications to quality control, management and improvement; simple experimental designs. Examples will be drawn from areas such as engineering, mining and manufacturing, commerce and industry.
Contact time Lectures/laboratories/tutorials: 4 hours per week.
Prerequisites A basic understanding of simple descriptive statistics and elementary probability.
Co-requisite: Internet access if studying externally.
Exclusions Students may not enrol in this unit and either of MAS180 Introduction to Statistics or MAS183 Statistical Data Analysis concurrently.
